The Wonderful World of Oz: A Full-Year Themed Curriculum

$150.00Price

Follow the yellow brick road through a full year of learning. Students read all 14 of L. Frank Baum’s original Oz books, from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to Glinda of Oz, and every subject connects back to the story. Dorothy’s cyclone opens a study of weather and forces. Eureka the kitten’s trial leads into lessons on evidence and fair courts. The Skeezer–Flathead war becomes a mock United Nations debate. Along the way, students explore themes of courage, friendship, belonging, forgiveness, leadership and identity, and see how literature connects to science, history, math and their own lives.

English Language Arts is built around close reading of all 14 books, which are free online. Students write essays, arguments, literary analyses, narratives, a play script, a detective case file and a persuasive speech, with weekly grammar and vocabulary lessons.

Mathematics has three separate tracks for Grades 6, 7 and 8, so students at different levels can learn side by side. Grade 8 includes Algebra 1 preparation. Each lesson has a worked example, practice problems, a challenge problem and web links. Real-world projects include designing an Oz theme park.

Science is hands-on throughout the year: weather, forces and motion, matter and chemistry, life science and genetics, Earth and space, electricity and magnetism, forensics, and engineering design. Labs use simple household materials and many free simulations, and the year ends with a science-fair project.

Social Studies offers three pathways: World History, Civics (with a Florida government focus) and U.S. History. Students use primary sources, museum collections and Supreme Court cases. Projects include a mock city council, a mock trial and writing a real Florida bill.

Art, Health and Physical Education appear every day, with Oz-inspired art projects, health and safety lessons (including hurricane preparedness and digital citizenship), and daily movement activities.

Each week comes in a student workbook and a matching instructor guide with answer keys. Each quarter ends with a review week, assessments and a family exhibition. The year finishes with a series capstone project, final exams, a portfolio showcase and a certificate of completion.
