Did You Know?
Florida state colleges offer dual enrollment opportunities that end at age 19, even though under IDEA, unique ability students can extend their high school education until age 22. This creates a scenario where, if these students take dual enrollment courses while on the FES-UA scholarship, they must graduate early to continue college studies. This forces students to lose up to $27,300 in scholarship funds and face an average in-state tuition of about $3,840 per year (or $384 per 3‑credit course).
This policy is unfair to special needs learners and their families, as it curtails access to critical financial support and disrupts academic continuity during a vital phase. To address this, SSA has partnered with ASU Universal Learners, offering a more flexible and cost-effective solution that lets unique ability students continue college courses without losing their scholarship eligibility, ensuring a smoother and more supportive educational pathway.
